A typical 12 volt solar battery tester is designed to test a variety of battery types, including AGM, gel cell, deep cycle, and marine batteries. The tester comes with 20 inch cables with clamps for hard to reach batteries and generally has an LED screen that is visible in both bright and low light conditions. It is also actually powered by the battery you are testing.
The solar battery tester can be made to be of any amount of amps that can range from 100 to even 800 amps. The sizes can also range from pocket sized to a heavy set box shape depending on the number of amps. Despite the size, most testers generally are meant to test 6 or 12 volt batteries.

To use a solar battery tester, each device offers a simple operation walk through that guides you through the testing sequences and provides two types of feedback: a numerical reading and a pass or fail LED assessment. Generally, these testers are only for measuring the specific gravity of the acid in all lead-acid batteries, however, it allows you to not only see the batteries’ state of charge, but also helps you to know which cells are weak or bad.
